What is Gatakers Artspace?

Nestled in the heart of Queensland's heritage city, Gatakers Artspace occupies two lovingly restored warehouses that have stood on Kent Street since the 1800s. Since opening its doors in 2010, the venue has grown into the central hub of the Fraser Coast's thriving arts community — a place where history breathes new life through contemporary creative practice. More than a gallery, it is a living, evolving space where exhibitions, workshops, artisan retail, and community come together under one roof.

What can you see and do at Gatakers Artspace?

The Artspace offers several distinct experiences across its heritage buildings. Dedicated gallery spaces host a rotating programme of exhibitions — from solo artist showcases to community-based creative projects — giving visitors fresh reasons to return throughout the year. An artisan retail store presents original works and handcrafted pieces by local makers, making it an ideal spot to take home a genuine piece of Fraser Coast creativity. Open Studio sessions also run regularly, inviting artists at all stages to drop in, create, and connect with others.

The Print Studio — hands-on printmaking in a historic setting

A standout feature of Gatakers Artspace is its dedicated Print Studio, home to the historic 1869 No. 5 iron platen hand press. This remarkable piece of printmaking history provides a genuinely hands-on experience that you'd be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in regional Queensland. The studio is equipped with two intaglio (etching) presses, a large Albion relief press, a generous inking bench, drawing tables, and outdoor tables for applying etching solutions and grounds — everything a practising printmaker needs.

The Print Studio is open every Wednesday and Saturday from 10am to 2pm, with experienced volunteer printmakers on hand to guide and assist. If it's your first visit, you're warmly encouraged to come and observe, ask questions, and get a feel for the space before committing to a full session. Once you've completed the studio induction, you're welcome to return and use the equipment under the supervision of the resident printmakers. A studio fee of $10 applies per session, and you'll need to supply your own paper, ink, and materials. Covered shoes are required under workplace health and safety guidelines.

Workshops and special programmes

Beyond the regular open sessions, the Print Studio hosts workshops throughout the year with experienced tutors covering more advanced and specialised techniques. Expressions of interest for upcoming workshops can be submitted directly to the Artspace by email. Group booking enquiries are also welcome — contact the team via email or phone to discuss availability and arrangements. Keep an eye on the events calendar for the latest programme, which regularly features arts-based wellbeing programmes, community exhibitions, and collaborative creative events.
