What permits do you need for K'gari?

How to get your vehicle access permit
All 4WD vehicles require a valid vehicle access permit to drive on K'gari. The island's roads are entirely sand tracks, and all vehicle movement is subject to Queensland Parks regulations. To apply online, navigate to the official Queensland Parks booking portal and select 'K'gari (formerly Fraser Island)' from the list of destinations. You'll need your vehicle's registration number, your planned arrival and departure dates, and a valid credit card. Enter your registration carefully — a typo can cause frustrating delays on arrival. Once payment is confirmed, save your permit confirmation somewhere accessible offline — to your phone's downloads folder and your email — so you can retrieve it without needing mobile data on the island. How to get your camping permit
All camping within Queensland Parks and Wildlife camping zones on K'gari requires a separately purchased camping permit, which must be displayed on your tent at all times. Camping permits are available online at the Queensland Parks portal, by phone on 13 74 68, or from Visitor Information Centres — for a full list of issuing centres, visit parks.des.qld.gov.au. Campsites can be pre-booked up to six months in advance, and early booking is strongly advised during school holidays and public holidays when popular zones fill quickly. Choosing a camping zone
K'gari offers a diverse range of camping experiences, from beachside sites along the eastern beach to shaded inland zones nestled among rainforest and freshwater lakes. Lake Boomanjin offers a more basic experience near the world's largest perched dune lake, while remote western sites like Ungowa provide a genuine off-the-beaten-track escape near mangroves and Wathumba Creek. Dingo safety and island rules
K'gari is home to a population of pure dingoes — referred to locally as wongari — and strict rules apply to protect both the animals and visitors. It is an offence to feed, provoke, or encourage dingo interactions, and very heavy fines apply. Keep children within arm's reach at all times, store all food in secure containers or dingo-proof boxes (available for hire from QPWS), and never leave food accessible. If approached by a dingo, face it and retreat calmly. Fish cleaning is prohibited in all camping areas, and freshwater fish are fully protected — fishing or collecting bait in K'gari's lakes and streams is not permitted. Camp only in designated areas; random camping is prohibited and can result in fines.
Getting to K'gari and driving on the island
A four-wheel-drive vehicle is essential — every road on K'gari is a sand track requiring reasonable under-vehicle clearance and appropriate recovery gear. Carry a snatch strap and recovery equipment as a minimum. Vehicles are available for hire from Hervey Bay, Eurong, and Kingfisher Bay Resort. Vehicle barges operate daily from River Heads (Hervey Bay) to Kingfisher Bay and Wanggoolba Creek, and from Inskip Point (Rainbow Beach) to Hook Point. Bookings are essential for barges departing River Heads. Drivers should always check tide times — it's recommended to keep off the beach for two hours either side of high tide. A short air service from Hervey Bay also provides access to the island. Off-road camper trailers are permitted; caravans are discouraged.

Coordinate your vehicle permit dates carefully to cover your entire stay, including a buffer of a day or two for weather delays, soft-sand conditions, or unexpected tide changes. Save your permit confirmation to your phone before you leave the mainland, as connectivity on the island is limited. Reduce your packaging before you go — bins on the island have limited capacity, and you're encouraged to separate recyclables and carry hazardous materials (batteries, chemicals, used oil) back to the mainland for proper disposal.
