One Day on K'gari: The Ultimate Self-Drive Itinerary
World Heritage rainforest on sand, crystal-clear lakes and 75 Mile Beach — here's how to make the most of a single day on K'gari (formerly Fraser Island).
Morning — board the ferry at River Heads
Catch the early vehicle barge from River Heads (south of Hervey Bay) across the Great Sandy Strait to Wanggoolba Creek. Lower your tyre pressure on arrival and drive the inland tracks toward Central Station.
Late morning — Lake McKenzie
Walk the boardwalk to Lake McKenzie, a perched freshwater lake ringed by pure white silica sand. Swim in the impossibly clear water before the day-tour crowds arrive.
Afternoon — 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek & the Maheno wreck
Drive the eastern beach highway. Float down crystal-clear Eli Creek, then continue north to the rusting hull of the SS Maheno, beached by a cyclone in 1935.
Late afternoon — Indian Head lookout, then return
Climb Indian Head for sweeping views — you'll often spot rays, sharks, turtles and (in season) whales in the water below. Allow plenty of time to reach the barge before the last afternoon crossing.
