Wolf Rock Dive Centre

Official Partner

Wolf Rock Dive Centre is a PADI 5 Star dive centre based in Rainbow Beach, Queensland, offering daily dive charters to Wolf Rock — widely regarded as Australia's best shark and ray dive. Located just 2km off Double Island Point, Wolf Rock sits within the Great Sandy Marine Park, where green zone status affords the site the strongest marine protections available under Queensland's zoning framework. It is the only known grey nurse shark gestation site on Australia's east coast — a critically endangered species — and the site has carried formal sanctuary recognition since 2003. Every dive at Wolf Rock delivers close encounters with large marine life. Grey nurse sharks are present year-round, while manta rays, leopard sharks, eagle rays, sea turtles, olive sea snakes and giant Queensland grouper make regular appearances alongside an array of ray species including blotched fantail rays. In winter, humpback whales add an unforgettable dimension to the experience. The volcanic pinnacles and gutters of Wolf Rock descend to depths of around 38 metres, creating a dynamic underwater landscape rich in both pelagic and macro life — nudibranchs, frogfish, octopus, pipe fish and eels reward those who look closely. All daily charters are double dives, departing Carlo Point boat ramp at 8am and returning by approximately 2–2:30pm. Groups are kept small, with a maximum of 10 guests split across two guided groups of 4–5 divers. The scenic 40-minute boat ride passes Inskip Point and skirts the southern end of K'gari (formerly Fraser Island), with a surface interval spent soaking up views of Double Island Point and the vivid hued sand cliffs that give Rainbow Beach its name. Enriched air Nitrox is included for all divers, extending bottom time and adding an extra layer of safety at depth. A minimum qualification of Open Water Diver (or equivalent) is required; Open Water-certified divers must dive under instruction via an Adventure Dive to go beyond 18 metres. Wolf Rock Dive also offers a full range of PADI courses — from beginner Open Water certification to Divemaster — and equipment hire is available for those travelling light. Beyond diving, Wolf Rock Dive Centre holds the only whale watching and swimming permit in Rainbow Beach. During the humpback whale migration (June to October), the team runs Whale Ocean Safari tours aboard their vessel Rona — small-group, three-hour ocean adventures exploring the Great Sandy Strait with a maximum of 12 guests. Relaxed sunset cruises within the sheltered waters of the Great Sandy Strait are also available during winter months, with views across to K'gari. K'gari day and overnight tours can be bundled with your dive experience through the centre's partnership with K'gari Explorer. Owned and operated by James and Fiona, Wolf Rock Dive Centre brings decades of worldwide diving experience to every charter, with a strong focus on safe practices, citizen science, and genuine ocean encounters in one of Australia's most remarkable marine environments.
