Tin Can Bay Houseboats
Official PartnerWake up to a different view every morning on the Great Sandy Strait. Tin Can Bay Houseboats offers self-skippered houseboat hire from the Cooloola Coast township of Tin Can Bay — your floating basecamp for exploring the pristine waterways beside UNESCO World Heritage-listed K'gari (formerly Fraser Island). **Do I need a boat licence?** No boat licence is required. A qualified skipper runs a comprehensive on-water briefing covering navigation, safety and vessel operation before you depart — usually taking a couple of hours — then accompanies the vessel out through the harbour until the whole crew feels comfortable at the helm. From that moment, the Great Sandy Strait (Biosphere) is yours to explore at your own pace. **What can I do on the water?** Choose your anchorage, drop crab pots from the tender, cast a line, wade ashore to a private beach, or watch the sun melt into the water from the rooftop deck. Dolphins, dugongs, large turtles, seasonal humpback whales and the occasional K'gari dingo have all been spotted along the route. The furthest day anchorage reaches Kingfisher Resort on the western coast of K'gari — approximately eight hours from Tin Can Bay. **What vessels are available?** The fleet has been refreshed in recent years. The Golden Grove is a 45-foot vessel accommodating two to eight guests, featuring memory foam mattresses, generous refrigeration, lithium battery storage, expanded solar capacity, a rooftop dining area, and a rear deck complete with BBQ and fish-cleaning station. A dinghy tender is included for shore landings, with waterbikes available to hire separately. **Prefer a guided day on the water?** Skippered day trips are also available for groups who want a guided experience — ideal for a day of fishing, swimming and a beachside BBQ near K'gari without an overnight commitment. **Getting here** Tin Can Bay sits on the Cooloola Coast, approximately 2.5 hours north of Brisbane by road. The closest airport is Maroochydore (Sunshine Coast Airport), roughly 1.5 hours' drive away. Secure vehicle parking is available on-site. All mobile carriers except Vodafone maintain coverage across most of the Sandy Strait, and all boats carry a 240-volt inverter for device charging. **What should I pack?** Just bring your food, drinks and towels — the vessels come fully equipped with everything else you need for a comfortable stay on the water.
