Official Partner

Wake to the sound of rolling surf and sea breezes in the coastal she oaks at Govi and Wongai on K'gari's eastern shore. **Beach camping between Dilli Village and Eurong with open, no-facility sites for 4WD-based and walk-in campers—plan around low tide, be dingo-safe, and book ahead.** Govi and Wongai form part of Beach Camping Zone 1 on K'gari (formerly Fraser Island), stretching along the eastern beach between Dilli Village and Eurong. You'll find natural, unfenced sites well suited to tent camping alongside your vehicle, walk-in stays and off-road camper trailers—but come fully self-sufficient, as there are no toilets or other amenities on site. A high-clearance 4WD is essential, and you can only drive the Eastern Beach around low tide. Generators are welcome between 9am and 9pm provided they run below 65 decibels, while campfires are prohibited throughout the zone. Mobile reception can be patchy, so sort your permits and check park alerts before you leave the mainland (QPWS). Where is Beach Camping Zone 1 (Govi and Wongai)? Between Dilli Village and the township of Eurong on K'gari's eastern beach, a short drive north from the Hook Point barge landing. K'gari lies about 15km off Hervey Bay and roughly 300km north of Brisbane (QPWS). How do you get there and when can you drive the beach? Access the island by high-clearance 4WD, on foot, by plane or on a commercial tour. The Eastern Beach scenic drive is accessible only around two hours either side of low tide—always check tide times and current conditions before you travel (QPWS). What facilities should you expect? This is open, natural beach camping with no toilets or amenities. Sites are nestled in coastal woodlands of banksias, pandanus and wattles. Set up above the high-tide mark in designated areas and avoid camping under trees after wet weather (QPWS). Are campfires and generators allowed? Campfires are not permitted in this zone. Generators are allowed from 9am to 9pm with a sound rating under 65 decibels (around 2.0Kva). Please use them considerately (QPWS). What safety rules apply, including dingoes and drones? It's an offence to feed or attract wongari (dingoes). Stay dingo-safe and consider fenced camping areas elsewhere if travelling with young children. Drones are prohibited in all K'gari camping areas unless authorised. Always follow QPWS alerts and on-island signage. What can you do nearby? Stroll the long eastern beach, explore nearby walking tracks, or day-trip the Southern Lakes scenic drive to Lake Boomanjin and Lake Birrabeen for picnics and swims in stunning freshwater settings (QPWS). Is there mobile coverage and when is check-in/out? Mobile coverage can be intermittent on the eastern beach. Check-in after 2pm and check-out by 11am on departure day. Book your camping permit and required vehicle access permit before you travel (QPWS).
