Hervey Bay Regional Gallery
Official PartnerHervey Bay Regional Gallery (HBRG) is a free destination gallery at the heart of Hervey Bay's cultural life, bringing nationally significant and locally resonant art to the Fraser Coast year-round. **A purpose-built gallery that connects hyper-local stories to nationally important conversations — and entry is always free.** Located at 166 Old Maryborough Road, Pialba, within the architecturally designed Fraser Coast Cultural Centre, HBRG presents a curated programme of national touring exhibitions alongside its own internally developed shows. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning regular, there's always something new to discover across the gallery's four exhibition spaces. ## What can you see at Hervey Bay Regional Gallery? HBRG's exhibition programme balances the local and the national with genuine ambition. Internally curated shows explore hyper-local themes — including Butchulla perspectives, Fraser Coast histories, and contemporary regional identity — while national touring exhibitions bring works by some of Australia's most celebrated artists directly to Hervey Bay. The gallery's growing collection includes works by Fiona Foley, Sidney Nolan, Charles Blackman, Michael Cook and Anna Louise Richardson, among many others. Alongside the main exhibition spaces, the gallery foyer features free drop-in activities for children and families through the Scribbly-Doodah Kids programme — no bookings required. Events and workshops run throughout the year for all ages, from teen art clubs and zine-making sessions to artist talks, film screenings, pottery workshops and the unique Dinner in a Situation series. ## Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize Every two years, HBRG hosts the Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize, an acquisitive biennial prize welcoming entries from Australian artists across all visual art mediums. It has quickly established itself as a significant event on the national art calendar. The inaugural prize in 2023 was won by a striking two-metre charcoal drawing of a wedge-tailed eagle; the 2025 prize was awarded to Sunshine Coast artist Amanda Bennetts for her video artwork *Carve Crevice from Grace*, which earned her $25,000. ## The Fiona Foley Artist Residency One of HBRG's most distinctive programmes, the Fiona Foley Artist Residency is an invitational biennial residency developed in partnership with Dr Fiona Foley. Each participating artist spends time on the mainland and on K'gari (formerly Fraser Island), often developing a project for exhibition at the gallery. Past residents include Brian Fuata (2022), Keg de Souza (2023), and Mia Boe (2024). ## The Butchulla Seasonal Garden Wrapping around the gallery on Old Maryborough Road and Main Street, the Butchulla Seasonal Garden highlights the deep inter-connectedness of nature and culture for Butchulla people — the Traditional Owners of this Country. Illustrated signage, produced with Butchulla artist Joel Barney, guides you through the traditional uses of native flora and seasonal signals. The garden is open at any time and free to explore. ## Planning your visit HBRG is fully accessible. Disability parking bays are available in the Charles Street car park, with a dedicated set-down area for Australian Disability Parking Scheme permit holders directly in front of the main entrance. Guide dogs and registered assistance dogs are welcome. Group visits — including school, community and tertiary groups — can be tailored to your interests. Contact the gallery directly to arrange a guided tour. The HBRG Shop stocks a curated selection of art, culture and history books alongside locally produced homewares, accessories, gifts and design products — a great spot to find a memorable take-home from your visit. **Opening hours:** Tuesday to Friday, 10am – 4pm; weekends, 10am – 2pm. Closed Mondays, Good Friday, ANZAC Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Note that partial or full gallery closures may occur during exhibition changeovers.
