Beach camping zone 8 - Marloo, Ocean Lake, Duling - K'gari (Fraser Island), Great Sandy National Park

Official Partner

Stretching along K'gari (formerly Fraser Island)'s remote northern eastern beach between Waddy Point and Ngkala Rocks, Beach Camping Zone 8 — comprising the Marloo, Ocean Lake and Duling camping areas — offers a genuine 'gone fishing' wilderness escape within Great Sandy National Park. Set among coastal dune woodland where she oaks, banksias, pandanus and wattles cast welcome shade over the sand, these three unfenced beach camps sit around 108km north of Hook Point and are accessible only by high clearance 4WD. This is freestyle, back-to-nature camping at its finest. There are no facilities at Marloo, Ocean Lake or Duling — come fully self-sufficient with all water, food, waste management equipment and a portable toilet. The nearest shower and toilet facilities are at the Waddy Point campground to the south. Generators are permitted under conditions, and both tent and camper trailer setups are welcome. Once camp is made, the Eastern Beach is your playground. Cast a line from the surf, take a sunset walk along the sand, or jump in the 4WD and seek out the Sandy Cape Lighthouse nearby. Watch the spinifex grass and goat's foot vine at work stabilising the dunes — a natural coastal engineering marvel that protects the island's shoreline. As an unfenced zone, dingoes (wongari) are present. All visitors must follow Be Dingo-Safe guidelines at all times — planning ahead is essential. Check the K'gari conditions report before you visit, note that the Eastern Beach scenic drive is only accessible within two hours either side of low tide, and ensure your camping permit and vehicle access permit are booked in advance, particularly during holiday periods. This camping zone sits within the K'gari World Heritage Area, recognised for its exceptional natural beauty and outstanding coastal dune landform development. Check in after 2pm and check out by 11am. Advance bookings are required for holiday periods — book online through Queensland Parks.
