Waddy Point beachfront camping area, Fraser Island Recreation Area
Official PartnerWake to the sound of waves and morning sunshine at Waddy Point beachfront camping area, one of K'gari's most scenic and sought-after camping spots. Tucked beneath a canopy of casuarina trees on the island's north-east coast, this beachfront site faces north across open ocean — making it the only place on K'gari (formerly Fraser Island) where you can enjoy a campfire right beside the beach. With little more than a reedy buffer separating your tent from the sand, the setting is as raw and spectacular as the island itself. Mornings begin with golden sunshine streaming across the water; evenings invite you to gather around the communal fire rings — one of the few places on K'gari where campfires are permitted (conditions apply, and you'll need to bring your own clean, untreated milled timber or fuel). The camping area is accessible by high-clearance 4WD vehicles only, reached via the Eastern Beach scenic drive and the 5.7km Middle Rocks Bypass Road. Travelling north along the Eastern Beach, Waddy Point lies well over 100km from the Hook Point barge landing — around 27km beyond Dundubara and roughly 42km past Eli Creek. Note that the Eastern Beach scenic drive is accessible only within two hours either side of low tide — plan your drive accordingly. Once you've set up camp, the adventures begin. Head out to the rocky headland to discover the fascinating rock pools, or follow the walking track — 2.4km return — out to the Binngih Sandblow for sweeping views across the dunes. On calm days, paddlers can take to the sheltered waters of Marloo Bay by canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Anglers will find the beach particularly rewarding — cast a line for tailor, whiting, dart, bream and flathead. A small beach lagoon close to the camping area adds another dimension of natural beauty to explore. On-site amenities cover the essentials: drinking water is available via taps (treat before use), and flushed toilet facilities are provided. Communal fire rings are set up for evening campfires. For waste disposal, head to the QPWS recycling and rubbish station near the southern end of Orchid Beach. Be aware that mobile coverage is patchy to non-existent in this part of K'gari — if you need to make a call, the Orchid Beach store has a public telephone you can use. Waddy Point beachfront camping area is part of the K'gari World Heritage Area, recognised globally for its exceptional natural beauty, outstanding coastal dune landform development and evolutionary history. The site is within the K'gari Recreation Area, managed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS). **Important — wongari (dingo) safety:** K'gari is home to a population of wongari (dingo). It is an offence to feed, attract or disturb a wongari anywhere on the island. Families with children are encouraged to consider camping in areas with wongari deterrent fencing. Always follow QPWS dingo-safe guidelines. Penalties apply for non-compliance. Bookings are made through the Queensland National Parks booking system. Campsites are un-numbered and each permit covers one vehicle. Arrival is from 14:00; please vacate by 11:00 on your departure day. **Before you visit:** Always check the K'gari conditions report and this listing for the latest park alerts, road closures and access conditions — nature can change quickly on the island.
