Fraser Island Fishing Units
Official PartnerWake to million‑dollar ocean views and cast a line metres from your door at Indian Head. Fraser Island Fishing Units deliver self‑contained, oceanfront stays on K'gari (formerly Fraser Island), with cabins or a highset house, gas barbeques, and serious fishing right out front. Watch whales breaching from the deck in season, wander to Champagne Pools, and chase tailor, whiting and bream along surf gutters. K'gari is barge‑access only and strictly 4WD, so arrive prepared and plan around tides. Where is it and what's nearby? Set above the rocky headland at Indian Head, you're steps from three options: the headland itself, open surf beach, or a quiet bay protected by the point. Champagne Pools are close by for a saltwater soak, and whales can be seen breaching from the units when they pass the headland. What accommodation and facilities are offered? Choose a highset house or one of the fishermen's cabins. Each is self‑contained and equipped for comfortable stays, with gas barbeques and all the kitchen essentials you need. The location is wonderfully remote — you'll enjoy star‑filled nights and early starts on the beach with nothing but ocean and birdlife for company. How do I get there and do I need a 4WD? Reaching K'gari means taking the barge across — no advance booking is required, so allow plenty of time before departure and bring cash as card payment is not available at the crossing. Once on the island, a capable 4WD is essential; driving conditions shift with the weather and tides, so plan your route accordingly. What's the fishing like at Indian Head? Indian Head is renowned for big tailor in season (winter). Surf gutters along Seventy‑Five Mile Beach produce whiting and bream in warmer months, with swallowtail year‑round. Rock ledges from Indian Head to Waddy Point hold classic species, and offshore you'll find both northern coral and southern reef fish. What permits and road rules apply on K'gari? Vehicle access permits are required and can be obtained at River Head barge landing, Kingfisher Bay Resort reception, and Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service offices in Brisbane, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Bundaberg and Rainbow Beach. Speed limits are 35 km/h on inland roads and 80 km/h on Seventy‑Five Mile Beach; normal road rules apply. Carry essentials including towrope, spade, water and a first aid kit. Planning to stay? Enquire direct with the operator to check availability and pricing, then plan your barge crossing and 4WD route. Seventy‑Five Mile Beach doubles as a highway (shared with occasional light aircraft), so always drive to conditions and time your travel with the tides.
